Civil advocacy across the full range of court levels in the Eastern Caribbean and Caribbean-wide — from first-instance trials through to appellate hearings before the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
Renée has advocated on behalf of the Ministries and statutory agencies of the Government of Montserrat before the Magistrate's Court, the High Court of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, the Eastern Caribbean Court of Appeal, and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. She has also instructed and retained external counsel for matters before the English High Court and the Privy Council.
Appellate experience is a consistent thread in her career. Recent appeals include constitutional and commercial matters heard at the Court of Appeal and the Privy Council, where she has successfully led and resisted appeals on behalf of government actors.
Renée has run civil matters across a broad spectrum of subject-matter, combining oral advocacy with the drafting of pleadings, witness work, and negotiated settlement:
Renée acts through every stage of a civil matter — witness interviews, drafting of court documents and pleadings, negotiating settlements, attending mediation, and ultimately advocating at trial and on appeal. She has also supervised junior and senior Crown Counsel by reviewing legal opinions and litigation documents for quality, strategy and accuracy.
For nearly a decade, Renée acted for the Government of Montserrat, including periods acting as Attorney-General in the absence of the substantive post-holder — attending Cabinet and the Legislative Assembly. She has since served as Legal Counsel (Litigation) at the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority, continuing that public-sector thread through the conduct of litigation including judicial review and pre-action protocol responses.
Successfully led appeal to the Privy Council against a decision to partially allow the appeal of disqualified directors; at the High Court, obtained the winding up of the companies concerned.
Successfully resisted appeals against a constitutional claim at the Court of Appeal and the Privy Council, concerning the right to free speech.
Successfully struck out fraud and negligence claims against various government actors across fifteen different claims filed in respect of misappropriated lands.
Successfully obtained judgment for breach of contract against ferry agents who misappropriated ticket monies, on the basis of accounting evidence.
